SoDo District, Seattle, WA
2018
Seattle has a surplus of vacant luxury housing developments that are being used to bank money off property values rather than put to use. Using one of these vacant luxury residential buildings as an armature, there is an opportunity to enhance the urban ecology of SoDo by introducing an urban microclimate housing a sensitive species into the building’s program. Introducing this level of urban ecology will help to supplementary repair the effects that these “money bank” buildings have on the collective culture of the city. The SoDo area is historically an industrial hub, located adjacent to the Seattle Port. The lack of urban ecology and forestry is stark compared to Seattle as a whole. Creating this microclimate at a transitional time in the zoning and development of this neighborhood will in turn create an example for future projects to further enhance the urban ecology of the district.
